Rigging and Signalling

This one-day Rigging and Signalling (Level 1) course teaches workers the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely plan and control basic lifting operations using hoisting equipment.

Description

Certification: Alpha Training Solutions

Validity: 3 years

Course Length: 1 Day

Delivery: On your site.

Course Overview

This program is designed to meet the needs of industrial employers across British Columbia and Alberta. The course focuses on safe lifting practices, regulatory compliance, and real-world worker competency while minimizing time away from the job site.

The program focuses on the core responsibilities of workers performing basic rigging and signalling duties when operating around hoisting equipment.

Skills and Knowledge Covered

Participants learn how to safely plan and execute lifting operations by developing competency in:

• Load weight estimation and calculation
• Centre of gravity identification
• Sling angles and load force effects
• Working Load Limit (WLL) verification
• Hitch configurations and rigging selection
• Rigging hardware inspection and serviceability
• Hazard identification during lifting operations
• Tag line use and load control techniques
• Establishing exclusion zones around lifts
• Standard crane hand signals and communication procedures

These concepts are taught using realistic lifting scenarios commonly encountered in construction, industrial, and resource sector worksites.

Practical Training and Evaluation

The course focuses on hands-on rigging exercises and signalling practice.

Students complete multiple lifting scenarios that require them to:

• Evaluate the load and lifting points
• Identify the centre of gravity
• Select appropriate rigging equipment
• Verify equipment capacity and working load limits
• Establish safe work zones and exclusion areas
• Control loads using tag lines
• Communicate with the operator using proper hand signals

Exercises are designed to reflect real jobsite conditions rather than simplified classroom demonstrations.

Practical Training Requirements

The practical evaluation requires access to a controlled work environment such as:

• Yard
• Warehouse space
• Fabrication or training area

This work area must be separate from active operations to allow lifting activities to be conducted safely.

Training requires the use of a hoisting device capable of lifting loads, such as equipment fitted with approved lifting attachments that comply with applicable safety requirements.

Training Loads and Rigging Equipment

During the practical exercises, students work with multiple loads of different shapes and weights to develop rigging skills across a variety of lifting situations.

Training loads must:

• Represent realistic lifting scenarios
• Be heavy enough to demonstrate proper rigging techniques
• Remain well within the safe capacity of the hoisting equipment (less than 50% of equipment capacity)

All rigging hardware used during training must be:

• In good serviceable condition
• Appropriately rated for the loads used
• Properly inspected and documented where required

Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Plan and prepare for basic lifting operations
• Select and inspect appropriate rigging equipment
• Calculate and verify load forces and equipment limits
• Communicate safely with equipment operators
• Maintain safe lifting practices on industrial worksites
