Skid Steer - Blended

This comprehensive course is designed for new and recertifying operators who need to master safe, competent, and legally compliant skid steer operation in Canada.

Description

Certification: Alpha Training Solutions

Validity: 3 years

Delivery: Blended. Please read below for more information.

This blended skid steer operator safety course provides workers with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate skid steer loaders in industrial and construction environments. The program is designed to meet the needs of Canadian employers, with a strong focus on regulatory compliance, real-world hazard recognition, machine-specific risks, and minimal disruption to operations.

The training delivers the same depth of instruction as a traditional full-day course. Theory is completed online at the worker’s own pace, while practical skills are evaluated on-site. This blended model allows workers to gain foundational knowledge conveniently while enabling the in-person assessment to focus on demonstrating real-world competency.

The course follows the complete occupational skid steer operating workflow, from pre-use planning through safe operation, hazard management, and proper shutdown. Content is structured around how incidents actually occur in the field and how they are prevented through informed decision-making, controlled operation, and strict adherence to Canadian occupational health and safety legislation.

Training modules include:

  • Regulatory responsibilities and the general duty clause
  • Competency and authorization requirements
  • Machine components and hydraulic systems
  • Skid steer stability principles and load dynamics
  • Control systems and safe operating techniques
  • Pre-use inspections and documentation
  • Safe travel and movement
  • Terrain and slope hazards
  • Attachments and quick-coupler systems
  • Entry and exit procedures
  • Shutdown and cold weather operation
  • Emergency response including rollover and entrapment scenarios

Practical Assessment

Participants complete a hands-on practical evaluation conducted by a qualified assessor or a competent employer-designated representative. The standardized assessment verifies:

  • Pre-use inspection
  • Safe mounting and dismounting
  • Control operation
  • Travel and load handling
  • Attachment use
  • Hazard awareness
  • Proper shutdown procedures

Successful completion is documented to support employer due diligence and workplace safety compliance.

This blended training ensures workers are equipped to operate skid steer loaders safely under real working conditions, while giving employers confidence that the training is defensible, consistent, and aligned with occupational health and safety expectations.

Important Note: Completion of this course confirms training only and does not authorize operation of a skid steer loader. Employer authorization and site-specific training are required before workplace use. Practical assessment is completed by a qualified assessor or competent employer-designated representative, with competency documented for employer due diligence.
