Anyone who wants practical bear safety and inert bear spray training
This Bear Aware course is designed for anyone who spends time in bear country and wants practical, defensible training on how to reduce the likelihood and severity of bear encounters. The course covers bear behaviour, seasonal risk, bear sign, attractant control, planning, avoiding surprise encounters, encounter response, bear spray limitations, and what to do after an encounter.
Participants will learn why prevention matters, how common bear encounters develop, how to recognize conditions that increase risk, and how to make safer decisions before an encounter becomes urgent. The course also addresses bear spray versus firearms, bear bells and bear bangers, bear speed, and why no deterrent should be treated as a complete safety plan.
The classroom portion is followed by a practical inert bear spray component. Participants practise safe carry position, drawing from a holster, nozzle awareness, safety clip removal, wind awareness, controlled discharge, and post-discharge movement using inert training spray.
This course does not provide firearms training, wildlife management training, bear hazing training, or live OC bear spray discharge. It focuses on practical risk reduction, sound judgment, and safe inert bear spray handling for real-world bear country conditions.
